Lawn Care: Caring For My Lawn

A dry application allows us to release essential nutrients in the lawn more evenly over time. A liquid based program gives a quick nutrient release without even nutrient uptake and therefore would take more applications to receive the same benefits.

It is best to water infrequently for longer periods of time rather than daily light watering. It is always better to water during the morning hours. On very hot days, it is good to water the turf in the afternoon for 10-15 minutes to provide cooling. To keep your lawn healthy and lush during periods of dry weather, it must receive 1 to 2 inches of water per week. Avoid watering at night unless you have no other choice.

Set the mower blade to no lower than 3.5 inches because the longer the grass blade, the longer the root. Mow frequently enough to avoid removing more than one-third of the grass blade. Be sure to always mow with a sharp blade. Avoid mowing during the hottest part of the day because the lawn can turn brown instantly. It is best to mow the lawn between early evening and dusk.

Moles become an issue during late winter, early spring when the ground begins to thaw. Moles are damaging to lawns, but there is very little we can do to stop them. Moles make their home burrows in high, dry spots, but they prefer to hunt in soil that is shaded, cool, moist, and populated by worms and insets. Moles swim through soil, often near the ground surface, in their search for worms, insects, and other foods. In doing so, they may damage plants by disrupting their roots. For more information of Moles you can visit the following link: http://icwdm.org/handbook/mammals/moles.asp

Depending on the products applied, the minimum requirements vary from immediate re-entry to waiting until the product dries OR a product may have to be watered in first. Your invoice will leave specific instructions after each application.

All products are registered and labeled by the EPA to be used where kids and pets live and play.

Most products applied work best when watered in, with the exception of broad leaf weed control. If weeds persist for more than 10 days after a treatment, please contact our office at 1-877-ZTEAM-01 for a free service call.

Dandelions, and other broad leaf weeds, cannot be prevented; they can only be controlled when actively growing. Different weeds grow at different times of the year. Ziehler Lawn and Tree Care includes weed control, as needed, with every treatment.

Unfortunately, organic products are not effective in the control of weeds. Ziehler Lawn and Tree Care will continue to research and test new products as they become available to the market.

Grubs are a favorite food of skunks and crows. They also feed on worms and other soil born insects. If an animal is digging in your lawn, it does not necessarily mean grubs are present, however, it is possible, and your lawn should be inspected as soon as possible by a Ziehler Lawn and Tree Care technician.

Several factors can cause discoloration immediately after mowing. Mowing too short, mowing with a dull blade or mowing at the wrong time of the day can all contribute to shocking the plant into a drought-like appearance.

More often than not, red or pink discoloration is often caused by a disease called red thread. Red thread is common in late spring/early summer when temperatures are 75-85 degrees with excessive rainfall or humidity. Red thread will not cause long-term damage to the turf.

Fertilizer binds very tightly to soil particles and cannot be removed by mowing the lawn. Some high-powered commercial mowers may suck up some of the fertilizer. To avoid this, wait 24 hours after an application before mowing.

You should only bag the clippings when too much time has passed between mowing and clumping occurs. You should also remove the clipping if there is active disease in your lawn, otherwise it is always best to mulch the clippings into the lawn.

Japanese beetles are the adult stage of the common white grub. If a heavy beetle population is present, it is highly likely that grubs are soon to follow. Be sure your lawn is protected with our grub control services. You can also protect your trees and shrubs from the damage of the beetle with our tree and shrub program.

Contrary to popular belief, moss is not an indication that a pH problem exists. Moss is generally present due to excessive shade and/or excessive moisture. The only way to eliminate moss is to improve sun exposure and airflow to the affected areas.

It is rare that thatch build up becomes excessive enough that it requires dethatching. Our core aeration helps reduce thatch, but also offers several other benefits to your lawn. Dethatching will cause damage to healthy roots, stems and grass blades. It will also increase the likelihood of weed germination.

Yes, we offer commercial lawn care services, residential & commercial tree and shrub services (such as emerald ash borer service) and pest control services, as well as many other enhancement services for your lawn.

Tree Care: Caring For My Trees and Shrubs

Cool season grasses require a large amount of sun to be healthy. Even shade tolerant grasses require at least 30% sun exposure per day.

Bill J. (Washington Township)

Over a two year period, I experienced a severe loss of lawn due to extreme drought conditions, weeds and fungus.

Ziehler Lawn and Tree Care, from Andrew Ziehler, James Palmieri, and the rest of the crew assigned to my property, were as upset as I about the situation.

They stayed on the problem, with many site visits, made some corrective measures, and this year, I can look at my lawn with pride and satisfaction. There are many other companies in our neighborhood, but none match the results that I have gotten because I called Ziehler to maintain my investment.
